After reading more about current events and listening to experts, I have been exposed to different sides of media effects on children and their impacts amongst the youth. I believe that media, in general, can have many beneficial effects on children, but the risks are more dangerous than we, as a society, take into account, and it is difficult to say whether media has more positive or negative effects.                According to a report, done by Common Sense Media, most teens spend an average of seven hours and 22 minutes on their phone, not including schoolwork. When we look at media from the negative point of view, it is quite influential not only for children but for every consumer. Since children are not fully mentally developed, it is easier for them to believe many misconceptions about life. We can see that media presents many unhealthy values, e.g...

For futher reseach

In case you are interested in learning more about media effects on children, I gathered a few interesting resources below.  1.       Caught in the net Caught in the net is a Czech documentary movie filmed in 2019. We have already talked about this document in class, but I would like to recommend it again. For those who do not know what this document is about, the main idea is to show how easy it is for children to talk to strangers online. Caught in the net shows us how easily can children be manipulated into having a sexual conversation or sending private pictures, which in most cases results in children being blackmailed to meet up with pedophiles and engage in sexual activity. I encourage you to see this document to understand better how the victims feel, what they are going through because this is a highly educational document that I believe everyone should see.                   Media influence on children is increasing each year as more sophisticated types of media have been developed. The dangers for pre-teens, aged 9-12, and teens, age 13-15, include many risks like identity theft, privacy concerns, social isolation or increase in mental health concerns such as anxiety, poor sleep, and depression. There are also many risks of becoming a target of cyberbullying or sexting.                 Some of these risks are a result of parents not educating their children on safe internet use or limited adult supervision. On the other hand, social media can also be beneficial, in terms of forming stronger friendships, both from their usual social circle, but also from various groups that one might be interested in (LGBTQIA+, artistic, cultural, etc.). It can also reduce social isolation, increase inclusion, or improve acces...

Early childhood is a period of time in which children are supposed to reach crucial developmental milestones. World Health Organization guidelines suggest that young children should use digital media for max. one hour a day. Several studies have been focused on the effects of excessive exposure of media on a child’s development and health. Long-term studies have indicated that excessive use of digital media not only leads to poorer physical health and obesity but also with mental health issues in preadolescents and adolescents.                Importantly, long-term researchers have found that high media exposure is harmful for early childhood development, in particular, children’s cognition and language outcomes. Screens displace opportunities for children to interact, play, communicate, and therefore to learn. On the other hand, long...

Nowadays, children have easy access to the internet. One of the main issues is that many parents do not control their social media presence, especially during pandemic, when they have many other issues to take care of. Many parents might think that their child is being safe in their bedroom, but the reality might be different. Lockdowns contributed to children spending more time online, the lack of socialization, and going through a difficult time such as a pandemic might result in children looking for online friends. Not only the pandemic, but the lack of parental love, time, strict boundaries that are often set by parents contribute to children trying to find a trusted person online. This is the main reason, why it is easy for a predator to find a child and take advantage of them.                Often, predators have a friendly approach, trying to make the ch...

Tik Tok is one of the most used social media platforms among adolescents. During the pandemic, the time adolescents spend on Tik Tok almost doubled, due to the effects of lockdown. Eating disorders, such as anorexia, primarily affect female adolescents, with a mortality rate 5-10 times higher than in the general population. Unfortunately, the topic of Anorexia is quite common on Tik Tok, although it is violating Tik Tok’s Terms of Service. Users often create different hashtags, that do not necessarily violate Terms of Service, but they are promoting and engaging users to change their eating behavior. Tik Tok’s algorithm records data from the users and proposes videos that are personalized for each user. Therefore, if a user sees a video dealing or promoting any type of eating disorder, the algorithm will keep suggesting such videos, contributing to obsessive behaviors.           ...
